So, about those Amare Stoudemire rumors...
Written by Brendan Bowers
Sunday, 14 February 2010 13:04

On Friday I managed to fully ignore some of the NBA trade rumors erupting off the twitter wire.  Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler to the Celtics for a box of basketballs being the main one.  And you know who you are that reported that nonsense too.  I won't put your name out there because you did write my favorite basketball book of all time about a basketball family from Jersey City, New Jersey, so we'll just decide to move forward as if that never happened...because that never did happen.

What did end up happening though, according to Cavaliers beat reporter Brian Windhorst, is that the Cavs have moved closer towards a deal with the Suns to bring Amare Stoudemire to Cleveland.

From Windy (early this morning):

"Sources have indicated the Cavs have gotten "pretty far down the tracks" in talking to the Suns about Stoudemire. It has even gotten to the point that the sides have discussed small details like payment schedules and salary reimbursement options. At this time of year, because many contracts are pro-rated differently, there are such things to work out in a trade.  Also, a source said that James has signed off on trading for Stoudemire."

Just a few hours ago, Brian updated that report in an interview with ESPN 850 WKNR by saying the proposed deal would involve the Cavaliers sending Zydrunas Ilgauskas and JJ Hickson to Phoenix for the services of the All Star Center Stoudemire.

He followed that interview up with a tweet saying that it won't happen today however, and the Cavaliers hope to hear back in the next couple days from Steve Kerr and the Phoenix Suns.

Via Waiting For Next Year:

"Sources say no Stoudemire trade today, he’s playing in All-Star Gm for PHX after all. But Cavs hoping for yes or no by early in week."

A Deal That's Done...Wizards - Mavs...

via SI.com's Ian Thomsen yesterday:

"The Dallas Mavericks have acquired Caron Butler in a seven-player trade with the Washington Wizards, SI.com has learned.  The Mavs will send Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton to Washington, saving the Wizards (17-33) up to $13.7 million next season should they choose not to exercise their option to pick up Howard's $10.9 million option next season.  In return, Dallas picks up a trio of players -- inluding Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson..."

Update (Sunday evening)...

Teams Sweeten Offer for Amare - via ESPN, Chris Broussard:

"...The Suns are mulling over whether the financial relief provided by Ilgauskas' $12 million contract -- they'll likely waive Ilgauskas after the trade -- and the young and talented Hickson are enough for them to part with an impact player like Stoudemire.  And the Cavaliers have to be fairly certain that Stoudemire would be willing to re-sign with them before giving up the fast-improving Hickson.  However, according to sources, Philadelphia's Andre Iguodala, appears to be the Suns' top choice...some close to Stoudemire believe Miami -- where he lives during the summer -- is his first choice..."

If you're asking me, where Amare wants to eventually resign aside, there has to be a team in the NBA that can do better than Z and Hickson for Stoudemire.  Igoudala straight-up would be a place to start.  Me personally, I hope this latest chatter has a similar effect on the Wizards and their asking price for Jamison, as it reportedly has on the rest of the NBA and their offering price for Stoudemire.  More as it develops...

Hey Brendan.
A Phoenix source refuted those rumourshttp://insider.espn.go.com/nba...mors#14433, ESPN's Rick Bucher thinks it's merely a ruse to get the Wizards to deal Jamison easier.

I tend to agree. The deal - as purported - does pretty much zero for the Suns. Why would they involve themselves in what amounts to a salary dump?
Ok, so they get Hickson - who's a pretty good player with some nice upside. But get Z and then cut him so the Cavs can get him back?
It doesn't seem too far off that rumoured Celtics deal in balance!

Don - I tend to agree with you in that I don't see why the Suns would make that deal at all. I never got too excited about the Stoudemire rumors to date based on the fact that I would have to assume, if your Phoenix, you have to at least be asking for Hickson, Z and his contract, AND Delonte West, who troubles aside, has a friendly contract and is a quality young player you could somewhat build around along with Hickson. The Celtics deal seemed like a sham to me right off the bat, creating some leverage, and who knows, maybe the Cavs are doing the same here with the Stoudemire talk. It wasn't too long ago that the reports were that the Cavs weren't interested in Stoudemire at all. Brian Windhorst though has a propensity for weighing in on these rumors when they seem to be materializing more truthfully, and he did so today. I'm interested to see what happens. And to that point, I am not necessarily sure I'd do a cart-wheel if the Cavs landed Stoudemire. I would if I knew he would come here - in a contract year - not concerned with putting up big numbers down the stretch to earn a max deal, but do so accepting a 'role.' If he did, and he did, that would be great. But if he came, and he didn't...stay tuned I guess.
I'm dubious.

Yeah, Cleveland have been playing some damn nice ball... and I think that stems around their defense. Adding Stoudemire would detract from that.
We all saw how 'nicely' he did alongside Shaq last season.

I think that Jamison... or Murphy would be a MUCH better fit.
Wow....

LeBron + Amare = CHAMPIONSHIP

I know, and I'm always open to adding an All Star F to the line-up - understatement - but I too sit dubious as to this latest in trade talk. I guess if it does happen, I gotta assume LeBron talked to Amare and Danny Ferry feels good about the fact that Amare won't be a distraction, and will come to blend in, buy in, and contribute. If he does do that, the enticing part of this thing, is that he obviously would do that better than JJ. Seems to be working well right now, and its basically a case of high risk, high reward. As far as the other talk, I really don't want Murphy at all unless its for Wally Scerbiak's expiring deal. I wouldn't trade Z or Hickson for Murphy, and I know Troy's a good player, and been playing well. Jamison's the deal I want, if there is a deal to be made. Jamison would be seemless, doesn't seem to be too much on-court risk associated with Antawn. His contract is tough though, but if I had to pick a move, I'd opt for Jamison.
