Yet another team which has been rumored to move might be staying. The New York Islanders could be getting a new, $350 million arena as well as a 30 year lease which would keep the team in Nassau for… well forever (seriously though, what is it with the Isles and long term deals?), pending approval from a vote on 8/1. Lighthouse hockey has a massive collection of links regarding the big news.

Also, I should have some actual content up today (hooray!), instead of links posts. I’ve had a relatively hectic schedule for the last couple of days regarding non-blog related stuff. I’ve also got an update on the comments- the site still isn’t finished, but when the Bloguin guys are finished with my site, the comments should be up.

The talk of relocation often annoys me. With the Coyotes’ ownership saga going on for months, and constant talk of relocation, it annoys me seeing as the fans have gone through a lot of crap only to watch some third rate city take their team. The Phoenix Coyotes got some good news lats night, as they will be staying in Phoenix for another season. However, this news was bad for Thrashers fans, as now they will be the target for relocation. I hope that someone who is willing to keep the team in Atlanta comes by quickly, before the Winnipeg vultures can get to them. Simply put- I’m sick of relocation.

In yesterday’s edition of penalty box readings, I brought up the subject of Sean Avery and his support of same sex marriage, and how it was good. Todd Reynolds, an agent for Uptown Sports Management, did not feel the same way. While people are allowed to speak freely, his thoughts were not really appropriate due to 1) the subject matter and 2) the negative PR his company gained. People will be less likely to work for and/or ask for representation from these guys knowing that they’re bigots. Hockey Wilderness also pointed out that teams who have players represented by Uptown Sports Management and the players themselves will be asked about their Agents feeling strongly against a subject like same-sex marriage.

Sean Avery is one of the most controversial players in the game. While he’s got his share of fans, he’s also got his share of detractors- namely fans of rival teams. I for one will say that I am not a fan of his- not only because of association but because of some of his on ice antics- turtling against fighters while trying to fight non-fighters. However, over the last few months, he’s been making some headlines- in a good way. Back in February, Avery said that he would support a gay hockey player coming out. Now he’s making a statement about gay marriage by supporting it. As Greg Wyshynski pointed out in the article, Avery’s support is a good thing- regardless of what he has said and done, Sean Avery is still a recognizable face in the NHL. Additionally, Avery’s support of gay marriage is good for the reputation of professional sports- somewhere where there's been very few advocates of gay rights.

I don’t usually follow MLS or Soccer (except for the rare occasions when I want to kill liver cells TFC is on), so forgive me for my lack of soccer knowledge. Earlier today in my twitter feed I saw an article (well, part two of the article to be exact) regarding Brian Mullan, a player for MLS’ Colorado Rapids and his 10 game suspension for a tackle on the Seattle Sounders Steve Zakuani. Here’s video of the tackle.

As you can see, the result of the hit was terrible. Zakuani’s leg was broken. Mullan slid trying to stop the ball, and instead hit Zakuani in the leg. Mullan’s a veteran who’s won 5 MLS cups in his career, he should’ve known better- it was a really reckless play that resulted in the young Zakuani having to miss time due to his stupidity.

If you’re a hockey fan, this all sounds very familiar to you? Yes, it does, because a similar incident happened in the NHL a few months ago.

Welcome to Hell on Ice, a blog about the NHL. If you're wondering who we are exactly... well, you can consider HoI to be the "spirtual successor" to a site that I formerly wrote for, Cycle Like the Sedins. Because I was recently contributing to the site, the Bloguin Overlords thought that I could take over as blog manager for CLS. However, after talking it over with James O'Brien and the Bloguin Overlords, they thought it would probably be a better idea if I got my own site. And here were are now, with Hell on Ice.

If you're wondering, i'm going to be the blog manager. Over the last 10 months i've been contributing to the Devils blog In Lou We Trust, and for the forseeable future i'll still be contributing there- when it comes to something that's relatively Devils-centric. Hell on Ice will be where i'm posting thoughts on the NHL, forays into stats-nerdery and occasionally something funny every now and then (that is, when i've got a funny idea). Laura from Thrashing the Blues and Dani from Benched Whale will also be contributing to the site every now and then.

Like every other bloguin site, the comments will be powered by Livefyre. However at the moment commenting doesn't seem to be available, so when that's fixed up you should be able to comment.

And for those wondering, yes there will be 100% more references to Daria on this site.

If you want to contact me, you can email me at Kevinsellathamby(at)gmail(dot)com or just use the form on the site. Either way works.
